Water Treatment Plant Operator I

Sudbury Water District (the District) is accepting applications for one full-time, experienced Water Treatment Plant Operator. The position is part of the Water Treatment Plant operations crew and report directly to the Operations Manager as required. Minimum qualifications strictly apply.

WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR

This is a union position with some overtime. Candidates must be available for on-call rotation as needed including nights and weekends. The pay range is $31.69 to $35.14/hour depending on licenses.

Desired Qualifications:
3-5 years of positive performance in the municipal drinking water industry.

RESPONSIBILITY:
The Water Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for the proper operation and maintenance of the water treatment facilities and pumping facilities.  These facilities include the wells, the pumping units, the aerators, the filtration tanks, the chemical feed systems, and the disinfection system.  The operator is responsible for testing the water characteristics so as to accurately maintain the proper dosages of the applied chemicals.  The operator is responsible for keeping accurate and complete records of the pumping and treatment process operations and maintenance.   The position is also responsible for other related assignments as required, including Distribution operations.

Requirements:  Education and experience requirements are determined by the Board of Certification of Operators of Drinking Water Supply Facilities and are outlined on the Education and Experience Requirements Worksheet for Operator Grade and Status.  Also, basic knowledge of personal computers, SCADA systems, electricity, and effective oral communications skills.  Possession of a valid Massachusetts Class B CDL with airbrakes endorsement is a plus.

Knowledge of:

  • Use of common tools, materials, motorized vehicles, and equipment used in maintenance and construction work.
  • Principles of water treatment and distribution maintenance and repair.
  • Basic mathematical principles.
  • Safe work practices and policies.

Ability to:

  • Learn to safely operate a variety of types of maintenance equipment.
  • Perform semi-skilled maintenance duties.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Read, interpret, and understand schematic diagrams.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Interact in an effective, respectful, and professional manner with the public
  • Use computers as part of their regular work duties

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be an innovative problem-solver who enjoys helping people
  • Enjoy working with their hands and manually inspecting and repairing devices.
  • Utilize excellent interpersonal and communication skills to support customers (residents and businesses).
  • Have experience with multiple types of technology (laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc.) and the ability to quickly learn new software applications.
  • Demonstrate exceptional attention to detail especially the ability to document work in a clear, concise, and detailed manner.

Education and Experience:

  • A minimum High school diploma or equivalent.

Licenses or Certificates:

  • Possession of a valid Massachusetts Drinking Water Supply Operator Certification of Grade 1 Treatment or higher.
  • Shall obtain and maintain Massachusetts Grade I Distribution and Grade I Treatment Operator certifications within eighteen (18) months of employment.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts driver’s license. Shall obtain and maintain a Class B CDL license within eighteen (18) months of employment.

Compensation and Benefits:
Hourly wage range: $31.69 to $35.14. The District offers a competitive benefits package, including medical, and dental coverage, 12 paid holidays, and participation in the Massachusetts Public Employees Retirement System.
